If this has already happened, call us immediately for our flood restoration and water removal services.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways to check if you have any water damage and steps you can take right now to prevent water getting into your home and causing extensive damage. Follow these nine tips and don’t let the next storm catch you by surprise!
1. Clean your gutters:
The very first thing you must do is probably the nastiest one. Remove the garbage that’s blocking your gutters and make sure they are working perfectly. Do this at least twice a year.
2. Tidy up your garden: You need a little bit of green outside, it looks good and it soaks up water from storms. What you don’t need is roots wrapping your pipes and breaking them. Make sure your garden is tidy and cut unnecessary vegetation.
3. Take care of sprinklers and hoses:
Most people don’t realise that entrances without you knowing it. Check them regularly to avoid any issues.
4. Inspect your ceiling: Something often overlooked but indicative of holding water is the ceiling. Take the time to periodically inspect your ceiling, especially after a big storm. Get ahead of possible water damage, both from leaks and bad weather and fix whatever issues you find as soon as possible.
5. Check your floors: Once you are done looking up, it is time to look down. Depending on the type of floor you have check for any underfoot swelling, lifted boards or tiles and water stains. Walk around barefoot and feel for any damp areas. If you find any signs of a flooded or water damaged floor, you need to address immediately – if you see anything which lead to wet floors it’s a good idea to resolve regardless if storms are heading your way.
6. Secure your windows:
Prevent anything nasty from outside trying to force their way into your home by caulking and securing your windows. It’s easy to do and completely worth it.
7. Test your faucet, shower, and tubs: Regularly check that nothing is leaking and everything is working properly. The last thing you want is to secure your house from a storm, only to find out water is coming from the inside.
8. Maintain your pipes: Sometimes your faucet works perfectly,
but your pipelines betray you – a pipeline bursting is ten times worse than a faucet failing to work properly. Once a year, check your pipes and work on them if necessary. Take notice of any excessive dripping.
9. Know what to do in an emergency:
If everything fails, you need to know how to turn the water off – completely off. Get to know your water main and learn how to shut it off.
Even with your best efforts, water damage or flooding in your home and workplace can still happen.
